Neosporin ointment is a medical cream that can be used to cure infections of the eyes, skin burns, ears, etc. Eye infections may occur due to dust that may get into the eyes due to any reason. Rinsing eyes using impure water, rubbing dusty hands on to the eyes, etc. can be a few most common reasons. Because of these activities, several bacteria get into the eyes and cause infections as a result. Although various types of ointments can be used to disinfect the eyes from certain bacteria, they must be used only after consulting an experienced medical practitioner. One of the best eye ointments that can be used to disinfect the eyes is Neosporin ointment.
Neosporin ointment or Neosporin ophthalmic ointment is the combination of neomycin, polymyxin B and bacitracin antibiotics that is used to treat eye infections caused due to certain bacteria. Neosporin ointment should not be used if one is allergic to neomycin, polymyxin B, and bacitracin antibacterial compounds. While using this ointment, the patient must make sure that the tip of Neosporin ointment tube is not in the direct contact of any type of surfaces such as hands, ears or eyes. If the tip of the tube of the ointment becomes contaminated, Neosporin ointment could cause serious infections to the eyes that may result in vision loss, or some other harmful injuries.
Neosporin ointment must be used with utmost caution. The cap of the tube must not be removed until the infected person is ready to use the Neosporin ointment. In order to use the ointment:
Rinse the hands properly with an antibacterial soap before using the Neosporin ointment.
After washing the hands, gently pull down the lower lid of the infected eye.
Apply a thin strip of Neosporin ointment into the lower lid of the eye, or as directed by the physician.
Close the eye when applied and move the eyeball round for 1 to 2 minutes.
Rinse the hands thoroughly immediately after using Neosporin ointment.
Neosporin ointment can also be used to treat irritation of the eyes. One should not share the used tube of Neosporin ointment with any other person to avoid transfer of infections. Neosporin ointment can be used for full length of time, or as suggested by the physician. Neosporin ointment cannot cure fungal or viral infections of the eyes.
If Neosporin ointment is being used since quite a while, the infected person must go through frequent eye checkups in order to ensure that the person is not experiencing any side effects. Regular visits to the doctor are necessary in such conditions. Neosporin ointment must be stored in a cool room temperature away from heat and moisture, and out of the reach of the kids. The ointment tube should be tightly capped when Neosporin ointment is not in use. One should not use the Neosporin ointment unless the doctor has prescribed for it.
In case a dose is missed, infected people should take the next dose as soon as they remember. They can then continue using the Neosporin ointment as per their regular scheduled time. Moreover, if any misperception or question about Neosporin ointment arises, they should talk to their pharmacists, doctors, or other health care professionals. If the improvement is not noticed, or the case becomes worse, people must go to the concerned doctor and tell him about the condition.
